Acne and congestion may sound like a bad traffic jam, but they're actually two very different beasts. Think of acne as that obnoxious friend who never leaves you alone and shows up uninvited to every party, leaving a trail of redness and irritation in its wake. 

 What is Acne and Congestion

Congestion, on the other hand, is more like the annoying roommate who clogs up your sink with hair and toothpaste. It's not as noticeable as acne, but when you’re dealing with it, it feels the same. In short, acne is the loud and obnoxious one, while congestion is quiet, but persistent.

What Causes Acne and Congestion

They say, “make lemonade when life gives you lemons”, but we’re betting that person only ever had the odd pimple. Never acne, let alone adult acne - which you thought was over after adolescence.  

But why do we get these bothersome breakouts?

Well, it's like a complex game of dominos, where one tiny thing can set off a whole chain reaction of chaos on your face. Hormones, genetics, stress, and even your diet can all play a part in acne production. Your face is a delicate ecosystem, and if one thing goes out of whack, it's party time for those pesky pimples.

Skin congestion…What causes this clogged-up mess?

Well, think of your pores as tiny little tunnels, and when they get blocked with oil, dead skin cells, and other gunk, it's like a pile-up on the freeway.

Too much of a good thing can be bad, and that goes for your skin's natural oils too. Add some environmental pollution, sweat, and makeup, and you've got a recipe for disaster. You’ve got rush hour traffic, but on your face. 

Understanding Acne and Congestion

Acne is a broad term and can be a tricky beast with all the confusing words and labels associated with it. But don't worry, we've got you covered! We've broken it all down into bite-sized pieces so you can wrap your head around it all in no time.

Blackheads

Tiny black or dark bumps on the skin caused by a build-up of oil and dead skin cells in the pores.

Whiteheads

Small, flesh-coloured bumps on the skin caused by oil and dead skin cells that clog the pores, leading to a white or yellowish appearance.

Milia

Small, white bumps that appear on the skin when dead skin cells get trapped under the surface, creating a small cyst.

Sebaceous filaments

Small, hair-like structures that line the pores and help to carry oil to the surface of the skin.

Enlarged pores

Visible openings on the skin that can become clogged with oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria, leading to acne breakouts.

Pimples

  1. Papules are small, raised bumps on the skin that can be red or pink and are often painful or tender to the touch.

  2. Pustules are similar to papules but are filled with pus, giving them a white or yellowish appearance.

Nodules

Large, painful bumps beneath the surface of the skin caused by a build-up of bacteria, oil, and dead skin cells.

Cysts

Large, pus-filled bumps that can be painful, take weeks to go away and may lead to scarring if left untreated.

Acne Categories and Grades 

To simplify things further acne is broken into three main categories:

Non-inflammatory acne

 

Inflammatory acne

This nifty system helps classify acne and these last two categories are divided further into grades of acne from 1 to 4; considering things like the number of lesions, size and location, and whether the acne is inflamed or not.

It’s like a report card for your pimples.
